Thirty-five percent of cancer deaths worldwide can be attributed to the effect of nine modifiable risk factors, according to results of a large collaborative study.
Although screening and treatment has reduced mortality from some cancers, "primary prevention through lifestyle and environmental interventions might offer the best option for reducing the large and increasing burden of cancers worldwide," Dr. Majid Ezzati and colleagues opine in their report, published in the November 19th issue of The Lancet.

*Asbestos exposure may increase colorectal
cancer risk in men*

Asbestos exposure is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer in men, which an apparent dose-response relationship, according to US researchers.
"This issue has been long contentious, and raises the interesting issue of how the fibers cause cancer in the gut (through which they presumably travel quickly)," Dr. Mark R. Cullen from Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut told Reuters Health.
Dr. Cullen and associates used data from the Beta-Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial (CARET) to investigate the risk of colorectal cancer among nearly 4000 men occupationally exposed to asbestos. Click here to read more...

*New treatments improve survival of patients with follicular lymphoma*

New treatments incorporating immunotherapy have significantly improved overall survival of patients with follicular lymphoma, according to a report in the October 17th advance online issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
"Emerging data suggest initial treatment choices you make for patients with follicular lymphoma may matter," Dr. Richard I. Fisher from University of Rochester in New York told Reuters Health.
Dr. Fisher and colleagues compared outcomes of patients with follicular lymphoma treated with three sequential treatment approaches: CHOP with or without nonspecific immunostimulants; ProMACE plus MOPP with or without interferon; and CHOP followed by monoclonal antibody therapy with rituximab or 131I-tositumomab.
Progression-free survival curves for the CHOP and ProMACE studies essentially overlapped, the authors report, with estimated 4-year progression-free survival rates of 46% and 48%, respectively. Click here to read more...

Eleven EPA employee unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals of the Civil Service have called for a moratorium on drinking water fluoridation programs across the country, and have asked EPA management to recognize fluoride as posing a serious risk of causing cancer in people.
